Mealybug DestroyersProduct Information

Cryptolaemus montrouzieri

Scientific Name:

Family: Coccinellidae
Genus: Cryptolaemus
Species: montrouzieri

Common Name: Mealybug Destroyer

Identification: Cryptolaemus montrouzieri is a small (4 mm or 1/6 “ long), dark brown ladybug with an orange head and tail. The female C.montrouzieri deposits her yellow eggs, singly, into the wooly mealybug egg masses. The C. montrouzieri larvae are up to 13 mm (or ½ “ long) and are white with a wax-like covering similar to what a mealybug looks like. The pupae are found in sheltered areas (underside of laves, stems, etc.).

Host Pest: Vine, Grape, Citrus, Long-tailed, Obscure and Affinis Mealybugs

Life Stage Shipped: Adult Beetles

Development: Egg – 4 larval stages – Pupa – Adult (6.5 weeks to complete life cycle at 70°F)
Adult longevity is 1 – 2 months and a female can lay 200-400 eggs in her lifetime

Mealybug DestroyersMode of Action: The adults and larvae of Cryptolaemus feed on all stages of the mealybugs. Young larvae and adults prefer mealybug eggs and smaller stages of the mealybugs. Older larvae eat all stages. When mealybugs are not present, Cryptolaemus will feed on aphids and scales.

Environment: Ideal temperature is 61° to 95°F
When temperatures are below 48°F, there is no activity

Pesticides: Use may not be compatible. Request technical information on specific pesticides.

Release: Release rate in vineyards: 500/acre and repeat as needed

Release timing: Cryptolaemus is most active in sunlight and when the mealybug population is high. Repeated releases may be necessary when mealybug populations are low. Cryptolaemus do not like plants with lots of hairs, such as tomato.

Release method: Release the adults on the infected plants in the evening or early morning.

Results: After the initial introduction of Cryptolaemus, a reduction of mealybugs can be seen. However, it can take numerous weeks before the mealybug population is under control. Uninfested new growth is a good sign that control has been achieved.

Upon receipt, release beetles as soon as possible.

Storage: Keep beetles cool while holding before release at 50 - 59°F.
